That's why I keep it close (underneath the seat in front of me).

If the stewardess is having a bad day - well then I'll use a jacket, scarfs, gloves what-ever to pad the gear before putting it in the over-head compartment.

I've only been asked to do so once in about twenty trips.
It was winter - so I had plenty of extra clothing to pad it.

In crowded areas I've been bumped into thousands of times. No problem - no issues with the lenses. The bag does fine for superficial protection.

Oh! Forgot to mention - the Lowepro does not have space for a laptop - which is a no-no when travelling.
