no, this 11,000$ lens isn't the replacement. But there has been a certain amount of traffic on canon rumors about patents for a II version of the 100-400. But figure if it does become true, it's going to have a 2 in the front of the pricetag, and probably a large digit after the 2. That already pushes it a bit out of affordability for those using it purely for recreational use.

the 100-400 is the most popular safari lens for a reason. Combo of price, results, and versatility is hard to beat, esp in an environment where weight limits and dust are key considerations. I was pretty happy with how it worked for me.
