A lens can only focus on one subject at a time so you will want to ensure you have enough depth of field (the depth of the zone that is in focus in front and behind your focus point) to make sure both subjects are in focus. Your camera, the focal length of your lens, the aperture you're using and the distance between you and the focal point will all come in to play.

If you know any of the above you can enter them into an online depth of field calculator such as DOFMaster http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html to get an idea of the settings you'll need. Trial and error works, too.

This YouTube video might be helpful, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwCXJttKaWE&feature=plcp&context=C4494fd4VDvjVQa1PpcFPVg4_xiFX-Jyd3-40ErXZVVIbBTmwhQf8%3D
