iMac Suddenly Runs Slow

Try this sequence

First, repair permissions.

Second, zap parameter ram: reboot and immediately hold cmd-opt-p-r keys until you hear the second set of start-up chimes.

Third, do a safe restart (which does some checking and repairs): reboot and hold down the shift key as soon as possible after startup chime (but not before). Hold shift key until you see the gray apple logo.

Then reboot as normal. None of the above will harm you, but hopefully they will fix what ails you.
