I know some that tried the D7K, and ended up keeping their D300 or in one case went with the D700 that would argue that with you. I won't, because it doesn't even matter to me. I just stated what I believe to be true based on opinions I respect, including professionals.

If you think the AF on the D300 cams is less successful in low light, you just haven't used a D300.

I own a D80, a D300, and a D7000. The D7000's AF is as good if not better than the D300 in ALL regards, including tracking motion, and low light.

Than you don't know how to properly test the AF system. The D300 is superior to the D7k in every way. I've had the D70s, D90, D300, and the problematic D7000. The only thing going for D7K was the high ISO and MP over the D300. I much prefered my D90 to the D7K come to think of it
