Thanks, Cleve! A technique that seems to work for me is to turn IS off when taking pictures where there's plenty of light--which means mostly outdoors, at high shutter speeds--and to turn it on in low-light settings--which means mostly indoors, using low shutter speeds.

BTW, a feature of the GX1 that I found particularly useful for the show photos is the level gauge. My editor is very fussy about photos being perfectly level, something i don't normally pay attention to as much as he does. The level gauge helped a lot to get this right.
