In the US any work is copyrighted at the instant of creation, and therefore whether it is marked or not anyone who uses something they do not own the copyright for know perfectly well that they don't own it! If they don't, then someone else does...

Sorry the point I was making didn't relate to the need to register - I was pointing out that the act of removing a copyright statement is itself a (separate) offence, as is wrongly claiming copyright ownership.
