Hi Andy,

I don't know what is available in the UK but I was in your same spot a while back. I had the Sigma 70-300 lens and wasn't happy with the results.

Before spent too much money I rented a Nikon 70-300VR and a 70-200Vr with Nikon 1.4TE and shot them both for a week (I was shooting a D70s at the time). While the 70-200 with the TE was a beautiful lens I found for me I didn't see a significant diference in the images versus the 70-300 VR Nikon. Plus I realized how large and heavy the 70-200VR was to carry and I was afraid it would get damaged, my luck

I ended up buying a 70-300VR and used the money I saved to buy a D300 (well, with a little more added) and used the higher ISO to help with sharpness.

Renting a lens before you buy can be very helpful, especially if it is an expensive lens.

To echo what others have said don't bother with a TE on other than highend fixed lenses.

I found there was a significant improvement in image quality on the Nikon 70-300VR verses the 70-300 Sigma I had.
Hope this helps.
