Actually dropping the 2 least significant bits out of 14 improves the SRW compression factor by a much larger factor than 2/14, these being (i) the noisiest, and (ii) LSB (sic) bits

An uncompressed NX200 RAW is ca. 100MB, 2x larger than the SRW before f/w 1.04; hence a mild compression was already used originally, albeit less efficient e.g. DNG.

Net: I agree that truncating the samples and lossy averaging of the 'noisy' bits in camera is a poor substitute to lossless compression. Yet Samsung may not have the necessary patents and in camera resources to do it right. Mitch

Not to mention, cutting 2 bits off is not saving that much file size, it is less than 20%, and there seems to be a 20-25% reduction in file size.
