Spot AF on 5D3?
Mar 28, 2012

I'm a Nikon user with D300 ready to move up to full-frame. One feature that would have me consider moving to 5D3 instead of D800 is Canon's "Spot AF" feature. I mostly shoot people in posed situations, but one thing that frustrates me is when focus ends up on someone's ear or hair in wider shots (e.g. full-length body) despite having the focus point on the eye. I know I could try manual focus or smaller aperture, but what I'm really looking for is narrower AF area that can better pinpoint focus on things inside the AF area.

Not having had any real-world experience with Canon's Spot AF, I'm wondering if anyone can elaborate whether that feature would be useful for the situation I described or whether there is little difference with the regular non-spot AF. Thank you.
