Archiving on BD-R discs dilema...

I am researching on getting a bluray player in order to backup my large photos and videos. However, i am getting seeing negative reviews on the reliability of BD-Rs of all brands as far as data retention. It seems like only the expensive BD-Rs that cost over 4 dollars each are the reliable ones while the 2 dollar or less are not reliable over just a few months. If i have to spend over 4 dollars per BD-R than i might as well back them up on DVD+Rs or DVD DL.

What is your experience on backing up data on BD-Rs?
