It's because of the original Nikon TBA

When the camera was announced, dealers were given a TBA on pricing for the grip, and a suggested retail of $616. Usually, dealers are given cost, and an MAP (or similar title), which is usually chosen as street price. Dealers didn't know what the grip would cost them, so they put the safe $616 into the system.
We've received a few, and have priced them at $429, since we only sell to locals, who probably wouldn't like getting price gouged!
