5D3 - Silent shutter - are YouTube vids misleading?
Mar 27, 2012

Users' descriptions of "very very VERY quiet," or "inaudible more than a few feet away" don't seem to jibe with the videos that demonstrate regular shutter versus silent shutter. I showed a couple of the videos to my wife and son and their response was, "Well, it's quieter, but not all that much quieter." That was my response, too. Are the videos misleading because of automatic gain of mics being used to record the shutter sounds? Is the shutter really as quiet as many describe?

An effective "silent shutter" might well be the deciding factor on my next camera purchase as a significant portion of my photography is of theatre productions and band and choir performances.

(I wish I could hear a 5D3 in person, but that isn't likely to happen any time soon.)
