Thanks for your answers. Of course as any good scientist will say, answers generate more questions. So to take advantage of your good will once again:

1. What mode were you using? On other cameras I choose A to select the optimum aperture for the lens and scene. For this lens, the optimum range seems to be 4-5.6.
2. Do you use exposure bracketing?
3. Do you use a tripod?

4. Why M for resolution? Do you primarily downsize for the web or is the image quality actually better? I'm not a pixel peeper and choose IQ over resolution every time.

Your info provides a nice starting point for me.
