No, I did not have the opportunity to use the older 300 F2.8 but I was closely looking at all the comments regarding this lens for the last 3 years. The older version was called the No1 sharp primer produced by Canon.

When Canon released the new version and I read the The -Digital-Picture.com review I made my decision to go for it.
It is a very good performer with the new Canon 2x TC Mark III.

The combo with F5.6 is also sharp, Auto focus in all settings (One shot AI modes) performs very well -> see attached photo.

With this combo you can shoot flying birds handheld but this is the max weight what I will recommend and is manageable.
