Background- paper, vinyl, material...?

trying to source a good background for people portrait photography and i've seen so many different types of backgrounds. I'm mainly going to be based at home so it needs to be able to be stored away when not in use but not sure which way to go.
I don't want to spend a fortune but don't want to buy something cheap and cheerful that will just about do the job but need replacing after a bit of use.
Any suggestions for what to go for? I'm assuming I would be best off with some sort of backdrop frame, but it paper hard-wearing enough (will be used when shooting kids!); is material opaque enough..? I saw some vinyl backdrops at Focus but they seemed very expensive.
Any input gratefully received! thanks
