Yellowstone holiday advice sought

Salt Lake City, I'd think, is the best choice for a flight to the area. It's farther than some of the others but it's larger, has more connections, etc. The drive to Jackson Hole via 89 through Ogden, Logan and Alpine is very scenic. (I have in-laws with property near Pinedale, Wy., they use SLC for flights.)

We stayed at the Old Faithful Inn and found the area and thermal features very photogenic. I wouldn't hesitate to take the gear you mentioned and would strongly consider something longer, especially for the animals. People will suggest different divisions of days between Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons but I guess it depends somewhat on your interests. Grand Tetons if you lean towards scenery, Yellowstone for animals. Both have plenty of both and Yellowstone's thermal features are unequaled.
