Take a backup drive image (not a system restore image).
Download either:
Macrium reflect
http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
Easus ToDo
http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/download.htm
Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/download.html
Install and save a drive image to a different partition.
Create a bootable disk from within the software and you will be able to recover from most future problems.
One other thing you can do is to relocate your "My Documents" folder to a different partition and also move your desktop.
That way, when you restore a drive image, all of your documents and desktop will remain intact.
