my x-pro1 2cents
Mar 25, 2012

Hi all,

I've been 'creeping' the Fuji forums for anything and everything X-Pro1 ever since Fuji announced the X-Pro1 back in January...just thought I'd finally give something back now that I have something to contribute

I purchased my X-Pro1 (with 35 f1.4) from Henry's in Scarborough (Toronto) yesterday and have taken a few snaps and spent a few hours with it...this is my 2 cents so far.

Disclaimer: My photography is purely a hobby, and before the X-pro1 i've only ever used the Nikon D90 as a serious image-maker.

The good:

  • Image quality in terms of resolution and high ISO is superb.

  • Aperture, shutter speed controls are convenient, easy, and fun to use.

  • Camera body build quality is fantastic.

  • Snappy startup times and shutter response

In other words, pretty much what every review has been saying so far.

The bad:

  • My number one problem is you can't use the exposure comp dial when in Manual mode with Auto-ISO...not sure if this is a firmware bug or not. Or maybe I'm using some wrong setting?

  • As all the reviews have been saying, yes, manual focus is a pain in the butt.

  • I tried the Nikon SB-600 flash on the X-pro1 just for some fun, but it seemed to be too heavy for the grip - it felt like i was going to drop the camera because of the offset weight distribution. Obviously the flash wasn't meant to go with the camera, but I just wanted to put that out there in case anyone was wondering. Maybe that's why Fuji created such a weird looking little flash for it.

Other observations (not good nor bad)

  • Camera body is larger than I expected (not that much smaller than D90+35ff1.4DX) which I think is good for handling if you're coming from a DSLR, but not necessarily good if you're looking for small form factor. The default grip on the camera does not come close to the D90 simply due to the form factor...something I think i will eventually get used to I also have to get used to not blocking the OVF with my fingers!

  • Seems to me autofocus works better in EVF in low light than using the OVF. Overall the autofocus is, I'd say, average - not bad enough to be a deal breaker for me. In good to moderate light it is fine.

Overall so far its a great camera in my opinion. The exposure comp + auto iso is kinda bad, but not a deal breaker for me since I mostly shoot in aperture priority mode where the exposure comp dial actually works. The build quality and image quality are certainly there, combined with the form factor and control layout - it makes me excited to go out and take pictures all over again
