I'm not a sports shooter but I've had a lot of coffee and shop talk with shooters who do. One advice they give is that if your camera has the high-ISO capability, you should never shoot wide-open. With longer lenses you will have less DOF so you need to use smaller aperture if possible to increase your chance of having your moving subject in focus. Makes sense I think.
