I (just) have a d800, not the "e", and a 200-400 (mk1) and have just been trying some garden birds with that and the tc17. I will try the tc14 soon too! To be able to get a short enough exposure to capture flitty small birds you need quite good light. I will be going in a more exotic trip soon and will be putting images from that on flickr when I get back - the next week needs to be spent testing the d800 to get used to it and see what works well. My HOPE (and maybe even expectation) is that I can drop from tc17 to tc14 or perhaps no teleconverter and crop more, and that the improved autofocus compared against the d700 I have been using will be good.

With small birds it is probably ALWAYS hard to get close enough to make them fill the screen nicely! Arthur
