Auto focus does not work in total darkness

I tried taking a long exposure shot (more than 30 seconds) in total darkness with the self timer. when I mounted my Canon EOS 1100D on the tripod and attempted to press the shutter, it was not able to focus as it was pitch dark. can anybody help me with this regard on how to manage a somewhat sharp focus in total darkness. i wanted to take some long exposure photos. thanks.
