Best affordable BIF set-up?
Mar 24, 2012

I do mostly landscape photography but lately have been toying with the idea of an economical APS-C set-up for BIF. After looking through the various Canon lenses, the 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM, while slow, looks pretty good given its price of only $450. The body is almost secondary other than AF capability, so I'm considering the T3i with the 16MP sensor/Digic 4 processor for $625.

The other combination I'm considering is the Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6 VR for $600 and the D5100 body for $650.

Both bodies have smallish OVF's, the one compromise that jumps out due to their low cost, and both have flip LCD's, which is nice but hardly essential.

Any comments or suggestions based upon personal experience?
