D800 for amateurs?

With the current state of DX bodies, is there any sense/role for a FF body like D800 for a NON-professional?

I am happy with my D7000, but understand some of its AF limitations. I primarily take pictures of my kids, indoors and outdoors along with family trips. How much of an improvement would it be upgrading to the D800? I am afraid the Nikon marketing along with tech/gear "addiction" may lead a few eager people to buying way more camera than they need ( myself included perhaps...)
