450D manual setting

I'm very new to using the manual setting on my 450D, and I really don't get why my test pics yesterday evening got very dark aka almost completely black. Well, that is to say that the manual says that AEB can't be changed when in manual mode, but why on earth is it set to -2?? It completely ruins the pictures.
Anyone has any suggestions on how I handle it?
