In praise of the Oly 14-42mm ll R kit lens... (imgs)
Mar 23, 2012

This lens is constantly affixed to my E-PL2. I own the 45mm f1.8 and it is a low light jewel to be sure. However, given the versatility of the kit zooms (14-42mm and 40-15mm) I really only use the 45 for low light/shallow DOF portrait shots.

I just returned from a Vegas, Grand Canyon, Sedona business/pleasure trip and realized when I got back that I never once mounted my 45mm to my camera I never felt the need to in the circumstances.

Below is an image I shot of the Harrah's Casino sign in Vegas, below it are two 100% crops from that image. The first crop is from the center of the frame at 42mm, the second is from the bottom left corner of the frame at 42mm -- I think they speak for themselves. I know the corner sharpness of this lens is a different story at 14mm, but even those images are also sharp at reasonable viewing sizes.

I think the 14-42mm ll R is a must have lens for me given its weight, size, and cost. And like I posted to another thread, I would not be afraid at all to shoot someones wedding with this lens and the 40-150mm.

God Bless,
