D700: Was the $2199 price a fire sale?

Just wondering if the $2199 price point the D700 received shortly after the D800 announcement was just done so to eliminate stock surplus. It seems that any site that was selling it at $2199 is sold out and anyone who DOES have stock is selling it for $2300-$2400.

I understand supply and demand, but it is interesting to me that the $2199 price is pretty hard to find in stock anywhere with no replenishment on the horizon.

Were those who got the D700 at $2199 this time around the lucky few? Will other retailers eventually get to the $2199 price point... do you hear me Amazon?
