MTF chart

Hi Ina. I use f/5.6 on the 18-55mm kit lens because at that aperture, you're getting maximum resolution and sharpness....according to Photozone.de: http://www.photozone.de/sony-alpha-aps-c-lens-tests/543-sony1855f3556nex?start=1

If you look at the MTF chart, the lens performs better at the Center, Border & Extreme edges of the frame. When you stop down to f/8 or f/11 or so, you actually lose sharpness. I trust Photozone over the years and use them as a guide as to the strengths & weaknesses of my current Nikon and Sony lenses. Occasionally, I'll stop down that Sony kit lens to reduce the amount of light coming in and get a slower exposure for effect.

As for focusing, I use AF-S at Center focus and I'll use the Touch screen option to pick my focus point. The night shots are taken with a tripod and wireless remote and usually done with Manual focus with Focus Peaking/Magnification turned on.

I use a NEX-5N but the above will work with the NEX-7.
