While I generally agree with you, some new kit does offer some benefits.

The newer 24-70 II L does look sharper and seems to focus more consitently that the old model. The new 5DIII has a new silent mode which is very very good, for me it's one of the big benefits of the 5DIII.

I'm finding the 5DIII is also better at driving lenses. My 35L is focussing better under most light levels on my 5DIII than it ever did on my 5DII.

The 5DIII does thin down one's camera list because it's so much more versatile that any previous Canon camera. It's high iso ability is excellent and it's new AF system is brilliant. There's no need for a 1D, 7D and 5D any more.
