Live View Manual settings

Yes, the camera is set to "M", the focus on both the lens and camera is set to "M." When I open live view I see the settings but the screen is almost blank. Indoors I can see some brightness from ceiling lights - very slight, nothing like the full image I see if the camera is set to automatic.
