I have now used NXViewer to convert the X10 RAW files to TIF. When imported same to LR 4 it retained more pixels than the LR import from Fuji's RAW.

Can we be sure that the TIFF from XNViewer was converted from the RAF proper rather than from the JPEG preview that the camera embeds in the RAF file? (I assume you meant XNViewer, not "NXViewer" or Nikon's ViewNX.)

If you find this suspicion plausible, it would be worth checking the picture dimensions: the original DSCF6360.JPG is either 4,000 x 3,000 or 2,816 x 2,112 pixels, whereas the in-RAF embedded preview is 2,048 x 1,536 in both cases. So... which size is the converted TIFF?

I read your reply only a couple of minutes after posting a reply showing some really terrible RAW to JPEG conversion results using XnView. These were so bad that I wondered if XnView faked the conversion, since the 8mp JPEG files it produced were markedly worse than the 3mp embedded JPEGs.

Well, I regret to say you may well be right.

Thanks for pointing out the imbedded JPG in the RAW, I did not know about it, although, it makes sense as it is probably done so one can view it in the cam itself.

So backtracking and double checking things the resultant conversion (in a number of diff formats) ended up with a size of 2048 x 1536. Thus, considerably less than the in cam 'proper' JPG.

Therefore bye, bye XNView and concentrate on a LR only solution.

I am still puzzled though as to where does the 'lens correction' occur as LR does not show any option that is specific to the X10 - must assume its 'hard coded' into the rendering process itself.
