5DIII outshines D800 at high ISO and holds its own otherwise
Mar 15, 2012

The Imaging Resource jpgs for the 5DIII and D800 are fascinating.

For cropping and landscape the D800 is spectacular. However, once ISO starts to increase, the decision by Canon to stay at 22MP appears to demonstrate just as spectacular a result, namely, extraordinarily clean images from the 5DIII in comparison to the D800.

Of course the Imaging Resource jpgs for the 5DIII were from a preproduction camera and so may understate the quality of the final RAW files once we get the production model and can start processing them with DPP or, eventually, LR4.

For me, the decision to acquire a 5DIII is confirmed. It is going to be a great camera, particularly since those clean images should carry over into the video.
