d800 needs to be excellent at iso 6400

I have to admit, I have a feeling that the D800 will be better for starscapes for me because I like to print them BIG when I get a great one.

The D800 has no time limit for photos, only video (which is 29m59s) so that's not a concern. It would be a good idea however to have a shutter release if you're going to get really into starscapes because then you'll want to do startrails.

And yes, compressed RAW will be something people get really into with the D800 I think.

However, yes...taking food out of your kids mouths isn't an option so if you can find something less expensive, go for it!
