The ring rotates around from open to close with a DA lens, its basically a ring that move the aperture lever in the lens. Like Austerpilot said, its basically a guess on the aperture, but it does work in A mode. Also turning off Framing Mode while using a DA lens, means you will get a live view of the aperture stopping down, which might be useful. The DA adaptor also works as a manual k mount adapter as well. I use that more than using the DA, mainly because I only have a DA kit lens for my *istDL

So what I understand is that the adapter's button pushes the Pentax's da lens aperture rod according to any aperture no. you want even though the nx system wont tell you what number it is you can guage the screen in live view as you turn the button.
