Best walkabout lens for D800

I know many similar questions have been asked, with good answers given.

My specific question: Does ANY lens exist that could do a proper job as general all round lens for somebody doing nature photography without having to carry half a dozen lenses around -- specifically trying to take advantage of 36 Mp capabilities.

I currently use my D7000 with 18-105 VR (only just good enough for this sensor) + 200-400 f4 for wildlife.

Don't tell me to forget about buying the D800, it is not meant for walkabout work....

Some serious answers would be much appreciated!

God bless,

PS. I am not desperate for wide angle greater than 24 mm, and actually prefer more tele than super wide -- this is causing my problem. A 14-24/16-35 would be wasted on me, and the 24-120 seems just OK. For a D800 you don't want just OK, you want EXCELLENT!
