5D3 vs. Nikon .jpg Comparometer tests
Mar 12, 2012

Any doubts as to the low light capabilities of the 5D3 compared to ANY other DSLR presently manufactured... Go to the Imaging-Resource Comparometer pages and check it out for yourself. I'll tell you what, find ANY manufacturers camera and match ISO settings with the 5D3, show me how this OTHER camera takes a better .jpg picture with less noise, and I'll personally send you a large cash award.

Simply stated, by way of Imaging-Resource's testing, nothing comes close to the low light, IQ capabilities of the new 5D3. It spanks the D700, embarrasses the D3X, and tops the D3S. It also, most surprising of all, beats out the New flagship 16MP Nikon D4. (Please note that they have not tested the Canon 1DX yet, nor the Nikon D800). The 1DX will likely best the 5D3, as it should. But as to the 36MP Nikon D800 with only half the ISO range, and the need for a full-time tripod at 36MP ... It won't even come close in low light capabilities. This is simply a statement on the limitations of today's technology. My choice is obvious, the 5D3.

Till now, I would have advised a photog wanting a camera for low-light and wedding photography to go with Nikon, for all else, Canon. But this is no longer the case. Nikon has much to worry about. The only real advantage I see with the D800 is tripod mounted Landscape and some tripod mounted studio work. Oh, btw, the last thing you need for a fine protrait is a 36MP capture of all the black heads on the tip of your portrait clients nose. The range of 18-22MP is just perfect. S The D800 is a tecnological wonder at an astonishing price! Way to go Nikon. But it's a very specialized camera and limited.

BTW, IMHO, Canon has done us all a great diservice in raising their prices the way they have. It's greedy and insulting. Still though, dollar for dollar, the 5D3 is the BEST DSLR you can purchase today. Not doubt about it. What I hope the D800 does is to expose the greed of today's Canon and force the lowering of their prices across the boards, Cameras, Lenses, and accessories. Let's hope.
