Are existing MF lenses PDAF compatible (whatever that means)?

I was wondering if there's an open path for oly and pana to include a hybrid AF like Nikon did in a future camera.

Now, I know that some lenses are not contrast-AF compatible, or focus really slow when using this algorithm, but I don't understand why. I heard it has something to do with the fact that CAF needs to make small steps and compare contrast, while PDAF can jump to correct position almost in one go.

The question is, is the reverse also true - that some lenses will not work with PDAF even if a camera features it?
