Why did Panasonic use a petal shaped hood?

I've suspected that a setup like yours could possibly work even at 7mm, but that brings up a question in my mind...

Why did Panasonic use a petal shaped hood if it isn't necessary to have the cutouts even at 7mm? If it doesn't block any view or vignette having the jar lid covering the cutouts, why have them?

Anyone have any ideas?
