Tripod to support long lens (for megazoom camera)

Hi everyone,

I want to buy a tripod for my megazoom camera (Canon SX40), and was wondering whether a normal tripod will do, or whether it has to be one specially made for cameras with long/heavy lenses. While I don't think that a normal tripod would tip over with a fully extended lens, I do wonder whether the camera's tripod thread or the piece that connects the tripod to the camera might get damaged by the high mechanical strain produced by the uneven distribution of weight caused by the extended lens.

I'd really appreciate it if owners of megazooms or DSLRs with long lenses could share what kind of tripod they use. Many thanks in advance for any advice!
