Why are some of the latest 4/3 mirrorless compact and similar cameras so expensive?

As we can see, Olympus and Panasonic can produce the small 12mp cameras very cheaply... Olympus is mass producing E-PL1s to a price that is lower than newer compact pocket cameras, yet offering vastly better performance (reflecting in huge sales) Panasonic have followed up with a very good offer on GF3, so far in the US, but I guess they will eventually have to follow up in the rest of the world too...

The E-M5 is specced much higher than the Canon and Nikon cameras you compare them to, you need to look at Canon 7D, Pentax K-5, Nikon D300 (still waiting for a new Nikon to replace this one) in which case it is priced just under...

Nikon 1 cameras are prices as they are because Nikon don't want them to compete with their D3100 or D5100... Nikon is also afraid what will happen to their DSLR market if they start to compete with it themselves with a new lens mount... Pentax Q is a novelty, I have no clue what Pentax is thinking or why...
