Lens design has advanced, as have many lenses, and since I really don't own lenses for emotional value or for how they feel in my hand but rather how they perform on current bodies (in both sharpness and most definitely in terms of rendering), I don't personally have any interest in the older stuff for the most part. There certainly are some stars from the past that still are viable today (the 180 2.8, the 105/2.5, and if you look at rendering more than sharpness, the 25-50 zoom), but overall, no, the modern stuff performs better. And that's more important to me than sentimental value. A camera is a tool, not a jewel.

While I agree with a lot of what you say I can honestly say that I have a different opinion to a degree. A couple of years ago I switched to Canon for various reasons after 20 years shooting Minolta gear. I wanted the best lenses I could get so I did a lot of research and then side by side testing of old "alternative brand" lenses to the current EOS offerings. I found that the old Contax Zeiss and Leica R lenses were still better in terms of sharpness, contrast, and color than modern Canon lenses. At least for the 1/2 or so primes focal lengths I ran tests on. Now it's true that these off brand lenses were picked for their highly regarded performance but I expect that there are still plenty of Nikon and Canon old lenses that are every bit as good as modern lenses.
But like you, they are all tools. Could care less whether they are new, old, Nikon, Canon, or whatever. I just want the best tools I can afford to get the shots I need.
