If this is your first DSLR, I would recommend buying a used body that's a few years old... D40, D3000, D5000, whatever. I wouldn't spend more than $350-$400, ideally less than that. The D40 would be a good choice.

Take the rest of your budget (if any) and invest it in another lens or two, maybe software like Lightroom 4, a tripod, a flash, and some good photography books. (which of these would benefit the most all depends on the type of photography you're interested in). These things can open up creative possibilities for you much moreso than spending more for a marginally better camera. I understand you may not be able to afford all these things right away of course.
