Which affordable macro lens for taking pics of watch dials, small objects, etc?

I'm looking for a Nikkor lens for taking close ups / macros of mainly watches but also small objects. My main lens is the 16-85mm VRII and I also have the old 50mm f1.8. Neither is really that good; if I use the 50mm on a tripod the subject is so far away and when I crop it isn't that clear.

I'd like an affordable macro lens if possible - I don't need to photograph something as if I were looking through a microscope, but I would like to shoot a nice close up without cropping the pic too much.

Please could you give me some suggestions?

Thanks!
