Does that still hold up with a modern camera though ?

The reason for the 12 stop window is that the A/D is 12-bit and doesn't have the DR of the sensor. Now we have 14-bit A/D and although I know they don't achieve the promised 14-bit, that is down to the genearal noise in the system and thus I don't think you can say the noise floor is proportional to the pixel size.
