Benefits of experimenting with a film camera?

I've always been interested in photography but I've only begun taking photos of my own for the past few years when I received a Canon EOS Rebel XSI from my mom one christmas. However, I've never used a film camera before. I recently found a camera bag left out on the street for trash with 3 old film cameras in it...two of the cameras were Canon EOS Elan II and the other one I can't remember exactly, I don't have them in front of me at the moment. I was just wondering what other photographers think the benefits are of experimenting/learning with a film camera over digital. I would like to keep one of the film cameras for myself if its worth it. I also have a lens that came with my rebel XSI and I was hoping I could use that on one of the film cameras but I am unsure if they are compatible. Please let me know your thoughts...
