As I intended to use the D800 as a pretty nice DX 15MP and a FF 36MP when needed

I get the feeling you want to use this camera 90% @ DX mode and 10% @ FX mode...

But I think Nikon built this camera for it's FF capabilities and not for 15MP dx shots.

The question that comes to mind: do you really need this camera for what it can do?

That would still be using it for what it can do...

I have to say, I'd assumed that I would buy a D4 to replace my D3 and the forthcoming D400 to replace my D300S. Most of what I do for 'work' is sports and it's a great combo. I do occasional landscape and studio work (some of it sports-based, some not) but couldn't justify a D3X for that and, in truth, couldn't justify a D800 based on the amount of that kind of work I do.

But the more I think about it, the more a D800 in DX crop mode would do 90% of what my D300S does, albeit slightly less conveniently, with image sizes similar to the D4 - and I'd have the high-res option.

I won't make the call until I see the D400, but it isn't as daft as it might first sound...
