Are Dpreview losing passion?
Mar 6, 2012

I wrote this in another thread and thought it's worth sharing with you to have your feeling about it:

"I'm really unhappy with the latest Dpreview reviews. They seem to have lost ... passion. They miss the point of new camera concepts like Nikon 1. They outweigh the importance of certain gimmicks in cameras, and miss the point of the essential DR benefit of EXR cams (F550exr had its share of quirks, but they slaughtered it in their superzoom comparison, though there were models with constant burnt highlights and no true WA capability like Canon SX220is, I just miss the point. Are they punishing audacity? I'd prefer having sometimes good shots from f550exr than always average flat ones from sx220is), they miss the excellent RAW (or even JPEG) ISO100 output of Nikon P7000/P7100 camera which surpasses clearly Canon G12 one, and it's wonderfully homogeneous lens (but they're OK with no AF in G12 video). Dpreview seem to have adopted industrial standards, and to reward prudence rather than flashes of genius. This explains maybe why I preferred lately Imaging-resource and Luminous landscape review. Unfortunately.

What Dpreview has kept, is one of the best photography community on the net."

As far as I'm concerned, what I gain with Nikon 1 continuous AF and superb sensor for its size are far more important than the ergonomic quirks which were a strategical choice rather than an unexpected gap. And what the DR EXR technology brings is essential and brings DSLRish tones to compact territory in a consistent way for the first time. isn't it worth the praise rather than splitting hairs about flare in certain conditions?

Just my thinking; what about yours?
