How many shots during the sporting event

It really depends upon the event.

For instance if you shoot comp. cheer, you generally have 2.5 minutes to photograph 30 athletes who are all in motion constantly. You want a couple of good shots of each person so figure 100 shots per squad, in those 2.5 minutes. No spray and pray, each shot needs to be cropped in the camera because they go on sale before the athletes go home. No time for editing. There is a minute break between squads and usually two half hour breaks a day for awards, etc. You can easily start shooting at 10am and end around 8pm while shooting 40 to 60 teams or more. I will leave you to do the math, but thousands a day is the norm.

You would be amazed how many shots you can get with a 7D if you turn the display off. I have gotten over 3500 on a single battery.
