5DIII: slow-motion video would have devoured the market
Mar 5, 2012

There's a nice paragraph in DPR's preview which neatly explained why the 5D and 5DII were so legendary, namely that each had something revolutionary about it:

Up until now, the 5D series has been a dynasty of slightly unlikely revolutionaries. The original EOS 5D of 2005 was the first 'affordable' full frame SLR, and the camera that cemented the 24x36mm sensor as the format of choice for many professional applications at a time when many were questioning its continued relevance. The 5D Mark II was the first SLR capable of recording full HD video, a feature that revolutionized the market in a fashion that no one could possibly have envisaged at the time - least of all Canon. On the face of it, though, the 5D Mark III offers little that looks likely to make the same impact.

High-Speed video has been a feature of only a couple of Casio, Fuji and Nikon bridge cameras. While they've been very fun to use, the lack of light and resolution has rendered these functions more gimicky than revolutionary.

Had the 5DIII had something like 210fps video at 640x480 it would have been a revelation! With the high-ISO performance, depth-of-field games and choice of lenses this slow-motion feature would hugely inspire videographers material, making the 5DIII easily as successful as the previous 5D's.

Alas...a chance was missed. Maybe it's not technically feasible, I'm not sure. But I do hope a large-sensor interchangeable-lens camera offers slow-motion video soon (NEX? M-4/3?)
