What's the best way to use my Canon 50mm f1.4 USM lens

I have found that I go into the custom settings and change the AF function to the * button rather than the shutter release. This gives me much more accurate AF since the half press has been unreliable for me.

I would give that a try and see if your infocus rate goes up considerably.
